CUP/DA Expansion Update

CINCINNATI, OH (March 9, 2018)

Cincinnati United Premier (CUP) is proud to announce that it has been selected by US Soccer as a part of its 2018 Development Academy (DA) expansion. As a result of this announcement, CUP will expand its DA involvement to the U15 age group (2004 birth year) for the 2018/19 season. This expansion news comes in the first year of CUP’s Development Academy participation. In the 2017/18 season, CUP joined the academy programming in the U12, U13, & U14 age groups.

“We are very appreciative of US Soccer recognizing the hard work of our staff and leadership in awarding this continued opportunity for our top players to participate at the highest youth club level in our country,” stated Dan Kunkemoeller, President of Cincinnati United.

Per US Soccer, new DA clubs and clubs receiving expansion into new age groups were selected for admission to the Development Academy's 12th season based on:

  • Academy leadership and quality of coaching staff
  • Desire to embrace Development Academy philosophy and core values
  • Infrastructure and investment of resources
  • Player production history, player pool depth and geographic location

“We are proud of what our club has accomplished in a very short period of time. We have been preparing for this first season for a couple of years now and we were really able to hit the ground running. We cannot thank our partner clubs enough for their involvement in making sure that the correct players ready for the DA opportunity are getting their shot. They have made their membership aware that they are putting the player first. A thank you must go out to Cincy SC, FOSC, Lexington FC, and Metro FC,” stated Scott Bower, Academy Director of CUP.

The CUP Development Academy looks forward to continuing to build the pathway from U12 through the U19 age group in the coming years. For this to occur, the club is committed to attracting the best and most committed players into the programming. The DA evaluation process may occur at any time during the season. The majority of the DA teams will be selected for the 2018/19 season prior to May 26, 2018. This would be before normal competitive soccer tryouts in the market.

CUP is one of an elite group of clubs in the area -- and one of only three in Ohio -- invited into US Soccer’s Development Academy program. Cleveland Internationals and Columbus Crew SC round out the Ohio DA list, along with two clubs from Indiana (Indiana Fire and Ft. Wayne United [U12 only]); there are currently no Kentucky clubs in the DA program. The U15 age group expansion will also include Toronto FC (MLS) & Shattuck St. Mary’s (Minn.), who will add the U15 age group for the 2018/19 season.
